What Seven African Countries Taught Me About Traveling Smarter

Many people submit a travel request for “Africa,” but my question is always the same: Where in Africa?

Africa isn’t a single experience, a single culture, or a single itinerary. It’s a vast, diverse continent made up of 50+ countries, each offering something completely different—from desert landscapes and ancient civilizations to coastal retreats and world-class safaris. After traveling through multiple African countries, I’ve learned that the smartest way to explore Africa is to be intentional, informed, and open to learning along the way.

Here’s what traveling through Morocco (4x), Kenya (2x), Egypt (2x), South Africa, Tanzania, Tunisia, and Mauritius taught me about traveling smarter.

Morocco – Pack for Versatility

With desert nights, coastal breezes, and city heat, Morocco made it clear that packing smart makes travel easier.

Travel smarter: Bring lightweight layers, comfortable walking shoes, and scarves for both practicality and cultural respect.

Kenya – Let Locals Lead the Experience

In Kenya, from Nairobi to the Maasai Mara, I learned that local guides transform your journey. Their storytelling, wildlife knowledge, and understanding of the land bring depth you can’t replicate on your own.

Travel smarter: Budget for expert guides—they enhance safety, education, and connection.

Egypt – Invest in the Experience

Egypt taught me that some experiences are worth the splurge—especially when it comes to hiring a knowledgeable local guide. With centuries of history layered into every city, Egypt is best experienced with someone who understands not only the stories behind the sites, but also the rhythm of the country itself.

A local guide provides more than historical context—they help navigate logistics, ensure safety, manage transportation, and handle bargaining in spaces where tourist haggling is common. From avoiding unnecessary stress to knowing when and how to negotiate, having a guide allows you to focus on the experience instead of the obstacles. Whether it’s a Nile cruise or a privately guided tour of ancient temples, expert insight elevates the journey from sightseeing to true understanding.

Travel smarter: Invest in guided experiences that offer security, efficiency, cultural insight, and access—so you spend your time absorbing history, not negotiating it.

Cape Town, South Africa – Flexibility Is Key

Cape Town’s beauty is undeniable, but weather and spontaneity taught me that flexibility creates the best memories. From wineries, to national monuments, safaris and night-life, Cape Town has something for everyone.

Travel smarter: Talk to the locals and leave room in your itinerary for last-minute recommendations and changes.

Tanzania – Prioritize the Once-in-a-Lifetime

Tanzania reinforced that some moments—like a Serengeti safari—are truly once in a lifetime. The beaches of Zanzibar are unmatched. The abundance of wildlife, clear beaches and blue skys is what really won me over.

Travel smarter: Invest in signature experiences you’ll never forget. Plan ahead for peak Safari times.

Tunisia – Details Make the Difference

From Roman ruins to Saharan landscapes, Tunisia taught me that small details shape the entire trip—currency, transport, and timing all matter. Knowing where to stay to visit certain areas is key to Tunisia.

Travel smarter: Prepare in advance so you can focus on enjoying the destination. The best meals are from local restaura leave the resorts and try the street food & mom & pop shops!

Mauritius – Comfort Enhances Exploration

Mauritius showed me that comfort isn’t a luxury—it’s a tool. When you’re well-rested and well-located, you explore better.

Travel smarter: Choose accommodations that reduce travel time and increase ease. Split your stay into 2 bases to cut long drives: This avoids crossing the island repeatedly and maximizes experience.

  • West Coast (Flic en Flac / Tamarin) → Nature, mountains, waterfalls, Le Morne, dolphins

  • North Coast (Grand Baie) → Beaches, boat trips, shopping, nightlife
